I told You So

Auto Date Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

I hate to say that I told you so….. but “I told you so!”

Look, Taraje is right (http://www.taraje.com) and I am right and A-Rod told you the truth.

A-Rod said that he used performance enhancing drugs because there was a lot of “PRESSURE” for him to perform when he signed his 10 year $252 Million dollar deal.

And guess what?

If he hit home runs, you cheer!!

If he doesn’t you miserable losers boo him.

You boo without the understanding of the pressure, without the understanding of what it feels like to be written about in the paper everyday and have your professional and personal life criticized. And you know what? If he gets hurt, you demonize him and say, “He better play, he gets paid to play.”

So you know what he does……. He goes out there to make you happy. So that you can talk s–t around the water cooler at work, so that you can fan open the sports page on the toilet while sipping on your morning coffee and so you can go to your local Walmart and buy your favorite jersey and hat and then…… what do you do when you find out the truth about what it takes for YOU TO BE ABLE TO enjoy the luxuries of winning?

You pitch a motherchumping fit!!!

LOOK IDIOTS!!! THIS IS FREAKING BASEBALL!!

It’s not FOOTBALL!
It’s not HOCKEY!
It’s not TRACK AND FIELD
It’s not WRESTLING
It’s not JUDO
It’s not MIXED MARTIAL ARTS.

It is BASEBALL. a sport where the only thing these guys are trying to do is increase their body’s torque so that they can hit the ball farther.

IT’S ONLY BASEBALL. You can just imagine the things that go on in the other sports.

PLEASE LET ME ASSURE YOU THAT I AM ONE OF THE STRONGEST people (when I was competing) that I’ve ever seen in sport and there are people that I lined up against that literally threw me around like a rag doll.

Come on people. The bottom line is this…. There aren’t many CLEAN “great ones” but the public NEEDS to believe that their are because we have to teach MERITOCRACY TO THE KIDS.

We have to teach “hard work” and “fairplay” and I believe in these concepts WHOLEHEARTEDLY!!!!

And I DO NOT BELIEVE NOR CONDONE DRUG USE…. but I do understand it and I understand how it can happen.

I’ve seen athletes from other countries who have the choice of living a life of poverty or helping their family move out of a low income region and into a home where they have food, decent housing and access to better schools, if they are willing to put their bodies on the line. This means that if they don’t perform, their family does not eat.

To be quite honest, many of us are in that situation. If we don’t perform, we don’t eat. However, the pressure for some of us to perform is quite different and somewhat self-manufactured.

Doing the right thing all the time is certainly noteworthy….. it just doesn’t pay the bills all the time nor win Championships which brings in jobs and money to a city. ;-)

Remember, A-Rod had a city on his shoulders. When he signed his contract, more workers at the stadium were hired, money was brought to the city through and increase of ticket sales, parking lots around the stadium flourished, popcorn and hot dog sales went up…. etc.,.

Don’t be mad with A-Rod.

If you want A-Rod to give his money back, then ALL OF YOU WHO BENEFITED OFF OF A-ROD should give your money back too. ESPN, Sports Illustrated, the parking lot attendant, Ticketmaster, the mom and pop shop that ran the sale when he signed, EVERYBODY.

Stop pointing the finger at A-Rod. Hell, HE WAS 1 OF 104 people that got popped for performance enhancing drugs in baseball. 1 of 104!!! And remember……. its ONLY baseball.

I’m so sorry to break this news to you, but you need to know and you need to stop finger pointing and be okay with today’s sporting environment.

NBC, ABC, FOX, ESPN, etc… don’t put people like you and me on television everyday. You know why? Because WE ARE REGULAR people. What we want to see on television is EXTRA-ordinary people. If we want to see regular people, then we watch reality television. When we watch sports, we want to see people do things that we know are unbelievable. Hell we even say it…. “That’s catch was unbelievable!” or “AMAZING!!!! I can’t believe that happened??!?!?” Well, it really didn’t, but it did.

Oh one more thing.

Lance Armstrong is CLEAN!!!! :-)

Take care and have a great day,

Coach Ferguson

A-Rod, Phelps, Jones…..Leave ‘em alone

Auto Date Monday, February 9th, 2009

Look, some of you are knuckleheads….

And some of you aren’t…..

You and I both know that you SEE what you want to see and don’t see what you don’t want to see.

Every 4 years the Olympics comes around and YOU want to see some amazing feats.

Every year the Tour de France comes around and YOU actually believe that people can ride their bikes for that long and that fast…..STOP BEING RIDICULOUS.

Look, I had to break the news to you, but here it is…..

SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE ATHLETES USE DRUGS AND IF THEY DIDN’T THEY WOULD NEVER BE YOUR FAVORITES!!!!

Let me say that again….

SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE ATHLETES USE DRUGS AND IF THEY DIDN’T THEY WOULD NEVER BE YOUR FAVORITES!!!

I’m not saying it’s right.  I’m just telling you how it is.

And for those who are sending me the Michael Phelps hate emails.  Put a motherchumpin’ sock in it…okay!!!

And use your brain for more than just a hat rack.  Read this very carefully…..

FIRST TIME WEED SMOKERS DON’T SMOKE FROM A BONG!!!!!!!

I’ll say it again….

FIRST TIME WEED SMOKERS DON’T SMOKE FROM A BONG!!!!!!!!

Bong smoking is classified as big boy stuff.  He’s wayyyy past the potty training weed stage. He’s using the toiled bowl.

And…….. leave these home run hitter alone. You know why they are hitting home runs.

And I don’t want to hear nothing about Babe Ruth. Babe was a bona fide alcoholic and the pitches were not coming as fast then as they are today. PERIOD!

The game has changed.

Do NOT be dismayed. There are still some athletes out there who compete clean. It’s just that more often than not, they never become your FAVORITE ATHLETE.

But there are some “clean” athletes that do win. And they are really good and then there are some good athletes who don’t compete “clean” who put pressure on the “great” athletes to stop competing clean because they are your “favorite athlete” and they have a family to feed and a lifestyle to maintain.

All I’m saying is that in the grand scheme of things….YOU, the fan, are in some cases just as guilty as the athletes.  And in some cases you aren’t.

But whatever the case, you do know of a Chump somewhere. Whether its on tv, in your home or at your job.  So get some Chump Repellent and start eliminating the Chumps today!!

Take Care,

Coach Ferguson

P.S. And I know they went back and tested Barry Bonds sample and found out that he used THG. The truth of the matter is that if they go back and test a bunch of samples from the 80’s and 90’s they will find similar things in ALL THE SPORTS….and I’m not telling you what somebody told me. I’m telling you what I know.  The behind the scenes game of sports is ugly.  At the end of the day, you want your team to win and I, along with the General Manager and players understand this  

P.P.S. The bottom line is this…. PARENTS, IT IS YOUR JOB TO BE YOUR CHILD’S ROLE MODEL, NOT LEBRON JAMES!!!

I appreciated many of your emails. You all are Chump Enemy #1.  Keep up the good work.

I wanted to share some of my readers.  Enjoy!

Does that [Chump Repellent] come in industrial sizes cause I need it for my kids too! I work in school-aged child care, and let me tell you my kids are the same way. If we’re playing a game, they do whatever it takes to win–even cheat. And they lose, or get out, there’s always some excuse why they weren’t out or why the loss was someone elses fault. They just can’t deal with it. Some of them will even fake an injury if they’re losing! It’s sad. Board games, sports, it doesn’t matter. They are sore losers, AND sore winners! And you can’t even play games for real for real because you can’t let some kids feel like losers.

Ha ha ha funny you say that.

I came out of industry 3 years ago to teach engineering in a high school.

They have a wrestling team and the kids have asked me to be the assistant couch a few times.

They complain when they get a scratch on their neck, when the have muscle aches, when they don’t get something for just showing up to a match, etc, etc. Unreal. I might consider it if I had the time, but knowing that I would be working with a bunch of ‘soft-serves’ really puts me off. I wonder how they would feel after a good BJJ or Judo session, ha ha ha.

Rhadi,

Unfortunately you are so correct.

I am 57 years old, still compete in Judo, and have managed to stay in good shape over the years.  I also play hockey with my 21 year old son in a league that is mostly 21 – 30 year olds, but I do manage to stay up with them.  For some reason, these opposing young studs never pick a fight with the “old man.”  One did about a year ago.  It was actually pretty funny.  The referees were not even sure they should give me a penalty because I never dropped my gloves and never hit him.  Utsuri goshi followed with Namu Juji Jime ended it pretty quickly.

What I find most troubling is very, very few of my Judo students can stay with me through the warm up exercises, and often they have to run out of the dojo to puke.  It is rather funny to watch them pause at the door and bow when they have a mouthful of puke.

I do every exercise with them, mainly because I like to, as well as show them I am not being mean, but this is what it takes.

Very few stay very long, but I refuse to lower my standards.

This is the nation we are becoming.

Stay strong.  I really enjoy and learn from your information.

They don’t make ‘em like they used to

Auto Date Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

I’ve had the privilege to coach high school wrestling this season and I must say it has been an absolutely rewarding experience.  I really like it and I like imparting my knowledge and wisdom on the kids in an educative environment.

I must also say, very candidly and openly that some of the kids now-a-days are like soft-serve ice cream. I’ve never met a group of people who feel so entitled to everything.

It just motherchumping pisses me off!!!!

How can you POSSIBLY expect to win, if you don’t put out a championship type effort everyday in practice?  It just isn’t plausible to expect to win. But these kids now-a-days actually expect to win.

You should not!!! You should expect to lose.

Well, I had to sit back and think.  I said to myself, “Self, maybe these kids don’t understand what it takes to win.”

So I explained it to them. I showed it to them. I provided them with examples, with stories. I spelled it out and you know what? Some of them got it, some of them are getting it and some of them will never get it. And here’s the hard thing about coaching kids……. You have to be cool with that. When you are coaching on the professional level, you can just fire the client and move on.  That is what I do. I fire them and move on.

In high school you cannot do that. You serve a higher purpose than just coaching the sport itself and the athlete. You have to nurture the child.

This nurturing stuff is for the birds. Ole Coach much rather deliver a swift kick to the seat of their pants and watch them skid on their foreheads on the pavement as he shuts the door. BUT!!!! That isn’t right no matter how good it may feel.

So everyday, I’m reduced to walking around and saying, “Sheesh. They don’t make ‘em like they used to.”

I wish I could give them a dose of Chump Repellent, but they are too young, it may damage them, but I can tell you right now that their parents need it.

Big Ben Does is again and the Steelers win

Auto Date Monday, February 2nd, 2009

When I was in college my football coach used to say,

“Big time players make big time plays in big time games.”

Well that is what we saw last night in the 2009 Super Bowl between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals.

No matter how you feel about the Steelers or the Cardinals, if you like football there is no way in the world that you couldn’t have absolutely loved that football game last night. I mean really!

At the end of the 2nd quarter, right before halftime I think that we got the opportunity to witness a play that will go down in history as one of the greatest interceptions of all time. It is without a doubt the greatest Super Bowl interception of all time.

If you didn’t see this play let me tell you what happened.

With no time left on the clock.  Steelers LineBacker James Harrison totally changed the game and quite frankly, in my opinion, was the main reason why the Pittsburgh Steeler won the game yesterday.  This dude intercepted the ball on the goal line and ran it 100 yards for a touchdown. at 242 pounds, this dude was making moves like a running back and displayed speed and agility that you would most likely expect from some of the top running backs in the NFL.

The touchdown was the longest interception return in Super Bowl history.

And quite frankly was the difference in the game. The bottom line is that the Pittsburgh Steelers had a defensive touchdown and the Arizona Cardinals didn’t.

============
Big Ben is the Man
============

On another note, I can tell you that Ben Roethlisberger played the type of football in this Super Bowl which will earn him a spot in the conversation of the all-time great quarterbacks.  Ben’s name will now be a part of the argument that is held in barbershops all over the country. You know the one that starts out with the phrase “I don’t care what nobodys says…..”    Just wait. You’ll be on the bus, in the store, on the phone or in the barbershop and somebody will just say outta nowhere, “I don’t care what nobody says, Ben Roethlisberger is the best quarterback of all time.”  And imimediately the argument will ensue.

The conversation will include Dan Marino of the Dolphins and then someone will say that he never won a Super Bowl. And then someone will say that you can’t win a Super Bowl by yourself so its not his fault. Then you will hear the Joe Montana and Steve Young argument followed by the old schoolers and old timers arguing about Johnny Unitas, Terry Bradshaw and Joe Theismann.  Someone will undoubtedly bring up Warren Moon’s passing yards in the NFL and CFL and tell you that if you talk about Marino, then you’ve got to talk about Moon if you are going to look at yards. Then someone will argue if you are going to talk Super Bowl rings then, “Are you trying to tell me that Jim McMahon of the 1985 Bears is a great quarterback? He has a Super Bowl ring but he wasn’t one of the greatest.”   Then Doug Williams will be brought up. And then Steve McNair and then the argument will go through it regular iteration of Dan Fouts, Joe Theisman, Len Dawson, Bob Griese, Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman.

But the beatiful thing about that argument is that no matter how ridiculous it sounds. Ben Roethlisberger can now squeeze is name into that argument.  You may get squashed and blasted for bringing his name up but last week you couldn’t and now you can.  And that makes “Big Ben” the man.

As a side note. If you would like to see the Top 5 Quarterback list you can go here. I think that this assessment is MORE than accurate. Besides, I’m in agreement with the number one QB of all time in this assessment.

Top 5 QBs of All Time

==============
What did we learn
from this years’
Super Bowl
==============

Here are my Top 5 Super Bowl Lessons/Moments

  1. I need to invest a little bit more time in the career of Faith Hill. I’ve watched her on many programs, seen her sing on television a couple of times and she is a class act. She did a phenomenal job in singing “America The Beautiful”
  2. Jennifer Hudson’s performance of the Star Spangled Banner was superb and was a great way to comeback from the horrible tragedy that she experienced in her personal life.
  3. Santonio Holmes’ game winning catch in Super Bowl 43 had to be one of the greatest catches of all time. For those of you that have never played football, I am telling you right now that it is is VERY DIFFICULT in order to catch the bowl and to make sure that both feet are in bounds and to do it with 3 defenders around under this type of pressure.AMAZING!
  4. As I said in the beginning, big time players make big time plays in big time games. And Larry Fitzgerald is a BIG TIME player. I knew he could catch, but I had NO IDEAL he was that fast. He is fast and his touchdown catch made the Super Bowl a great game. Without his touchdown, the Santonio Holmes touchdown does not become a “game winning catch”.
  5. The Super Bowl Commercials superbly sucked!!! I think that 5th graders could have come up with better concepts but that’s just me. Sometimes when you get all these over the top marketers in a room they forget to just keep things simple. I think the time would have been better served if they would have just put a website name on a screen for 30 seconds.

==============
Closing
==============

The Super Bowl is over and I know that you ate chips and dip and drank beer and ate hot dogs, french fries and had more than your fair share of peanuts and finger food and NOW it’s time to get back on the path of physical righteousness.

So let’s get with the program and get on the program.
It’s February 2009 and it’s time for us to make sure that we get fine and stay fine in 2009!!
