Did you do something outstanding today?

I had an opportunity to listen to Obama’s speech on race yesterday and I’d like to tell you this.

I’m not here to talk about race, about politics, about Obama, Hillary, Rev.
Wright or anything else,
what I do want to tell you is how it made me feel.

His speech made me feel like:

1. I have to do more as a parent to ensure that my son understands that every human being no matter of race, color or creed needs to be loved and respected. My wife and I do that now, but more often than not many of us live and conduct most of our daily experiences in a homogenous society and it is important to get more perspective about the global community.

2. I need to travel more with my family. I’ve had the opportunity to see a great deal of the world as a world class athlete, so my view of things isn’t myopic, it is truly global. I need to travel with my wife and son so that we can all experience all that the world has to offer. I was reading the book 4-hour Work Week, by Tim Ferris and he mentioned the importance of such an education

3. I need to volunteer more. I’ve been volunteering, especially in my church and doing fr-ee teleseminars, but I see that I need to do more. Its my job to lift as I climb. People’s prejudices can only be changed via a new perspective and positive experience. I truly have to be the change that I would like to see in the world.

4. I must embody the quote of Mother Theresa when she said something along the lines that the important thing is that when people leave your presence that they leave being better than when they came.

I just thought I’d share those things. As I said before, this isn’t a pro-this guy or pro-that gal type of email. This is a “we’re all in this thing together” email.

And I just wanted to let you know that hatred is for Chumps, racism is for Chumps and the real winners in life aren’t the ones wearing medals around their neck but the ones making a difference in the lives of others everyday.

How To Win and keep winning

Auto Date Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

================
Introduction
================

Okay, we’re deep into the month of March right now.

You were just on fire on the first of January, dancing and prancing about how you were going to make this year the best year ever!

You made a New Year’s Resolution, which you shaved down to an “Action Items” list which you shaved down to a daily “things-to-do-list”
and now here you sit, in front of your computer with barely 7% of your New Year’s Resolution done.

And if you’re like most of the people out there, you haven’t even made a dent in it.

Well, let me help you fix this problem right now.

================
Here’s How To Fix It
================

First, you have to recognize that each and every day which comes is going to end. That means at the end of the day, you have to recognize the score.

At the end of the day, you have to know if you WON or LOST.

So when you get up in the morning, ask yourself this question….

“WHAT DO I NEED TO DO IN ORDER TO WIN TODAY?”

Because your daily victories will lead to long term success.

Last night I had a coaching call with one of my clients and I explained to her that she needed to perform 40 minutes of cardiovascular exercise everyday and that if she didn’t do that along with her workout, then she would lose on that day and thus be preparing herself to lose.

I told her that if she did accomplish this goal, then she would be preparing herself to win.

The cardiovascular workout really has nothing to do with her success. Her success, as many of your successes, is determined by your ability to show a high level of stick-to-it-tive-ness and mental resolve to do what it is that you know that you should do in order to be successful.

============
Case In Point
============

It’s no secret that I go to church. I’ve told many of you this. But quite honestly, I’m super tired on the weekend and often times I’d much rather attend St. Mattress Cathedral or Bedside Baptist than the church which I normally attend.

So when the alarm goes off on Sunday, I have to ask myself, “Am I winning or losing by laying here?” And then I make a decision and govern myself accordingly.

The same goes for exercising, drinking, smoking, relationships, sex, taking medication, going to the doctor, eating, etc.,.

You must ask yourself if you are winning or losing.

=============
Watch out for this…
=============

Often time you may feel yourself trying to reason out a “win” in the face of a loss. Meaning, you may tell yourself, after dinner, that you are entitled to a piece of chocolate cake so you are actually “winning” by having it. Or you may get in my situation on Sundays where you tell yourself, “I’m tired and I could possibly, very well, make myself suceptible to an upper respiratory infection, so its probably best for me to lay here and get some sleep, because Lord knows I need it.”

When you start to do these things stop yourself.

You are being stricken with a vile disease called “CHUMPITIS”. Its a situation where you have swelling of the Chump and it is dangerous because this swelling can put pressure on the brain and clutter your judgement and sound reasoning.

If you find yourself in this situation or if you know some friends who may have this, please get them a healthy dose of Chump Repellent right away!

You can get it on sale here
–> http://www.rhadi.com/sales/stpatrickday_72hour_sale.html

Please, don’t wait. If you allow this disease to fester and grow it could infect many other people and send the infected person on a downward spiral to the land of Chumpville (which is no place you want to be, believe me).

So make sure you get your hands on Chump Repellent today.

Do Leprechauns Make Love?

Auto Date Monday, March 17th, 2008

Okay, here’s a dumb
joke that I heard
yesterday
================

Question: “Do Leprechauns make love?”

Answer: “Of course they do. They’re always getting LUCKY!”

Okay, it’s not funny, not at all, but it was so dumb that I had to laugh.

Because just as in Leprechauns making love, or people getting in shape, or winning tournaments - luck is about setting yourself up to be a winner.

If you want to become lucky, the key is to set yourself up by putting yourself into position to be lucky.

==================
How To Set Yourself Up
To Have Good Luck
==================

Right now I’m listening to a great Audio Book called “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle. Now, I’m not a huge fan of his but I feel that you can learn from various sources.

One of the key things that Eckhart talks about about focusing on the Now and not worrying about what happened before or what will happen afterward because when you get right down to it, we can’t control the past or the future, we can only control the NOW.

Focusing on the NOW will allow us to be LUCKY later.

The one thing that stop us from being able to focus on the NOW are the Chump Moments that creep into our life that stop us from creating the daily victories that will lead us towards success.

I remember the wise proverb which goes:

Q: “How do you eat and elephant?”
A: “One bite at a time”

In life the way that you achieve huge victories is win the small daily ones.

If you allow the Chump Moments to creep into your life, you will not be able to focus on winning NOW.

You can only win later if you choose to win today.

And you can’t win, if you don’t know EXACTLY how to play “the game.”

================
Here’s How To Play
================

- If you want to learn how to play the “fitness game” of life and you’re tired of losing, then go here and start winning –> http://www.rhadi.com/sales/stpatrickday_72hour_sale.html

- If you want to learn how to play the “grappling game” and you’re tired of not getting the victories that you know you should have, then go here and start winning
–> http://www.rhadi.com/sales/stpatrickday_72hour_sale.html

- If you want to FOCUS ON THE POWER OF NOW, the stop hesitating, stop allowing the Chump Moments to creep into your life and get on the path to winning today

I FREAKIN hate people that lie!

Introduction

I FREAKIN hate people that lie!

Really I do. If you say you’re are going to do something and that’s your intention, then do what you say you are going to do.

Recently I had a client tell me that they were going to do something and they really had no intention of doing what they TOLD ME that they were going to do. The did do some of what they told me they were going to do, but it was a cover.

For example……

If you told me that you wanted to borrow my car to go to the mall, but you also drove to your friends house, went to the park and went grocery shopping and then
came back, I would certainly be well within my rights to ask you, “Where in the hell have you been?”

And you would reply, “I went to the mall.”

And I would say, “But what took so long.”

And you would say, “I went to the mall!”

But you would be lying because you received the pass to use the car because going to the mall was your proposed intent. If you told me that you were going to use my car to go shopping, dip by your “friend’s” house, and take my ride all over God’s green earth, then I would probably tell you “No you can’t use the car.”

But you lied to me, you deceived me and in reality - you lied to yourself.

Now I have to other recourse but to jump dead off in your a$$ and let you know that this type of behavior won’t be tolerated…….. OR I can just let you go now.

Since I’m such the benevolent fellow and I believe in second chances….

I’m going to have a conversation with the client and allow them to decide what I should do and what the recourse of action should be.

Because its possible that I MAY have misunderstood something :-/

But what it looks like to me is that this individual can use a good dose of Chump Repellent.

Because being deceitful and deceiving yourself that you want to be a champion and not having champion type behavior is basically behaving like a muthachumping Chump!!

Chump Repellent, in this case, is the answer.

“Coach, help me out please, I’ve found something out that’s disturbing…”

Auto Date Friday, March 7th, 2008

Here’s a question that I received yesterday,

“Coach, help me out please. I’ve found something otu that’s disturbing. As much as I would like to believe that I’m mentally tough, I’m just not as tough as I thought I was. How can I get tougher and what must I do.”

- Simeon
Anchorage, AK

Answer:

You know what…. This is a familiar question to me. I was just having this conversation a couple of days ago with a good friend of mine by the name of Dr. Ron Groves. Dr. Groves explained this point well when he said that usually these cases are proceeded by individuals who have had a lot of success and/or successes with minimum effort and now they are confronted with the situation where their future success is going to require an effort in which they are not familiar. Its going to be uncomfortable for them. Then they begin to believe that things shouldn’t be this hard in order to be successful because they had a considerable amount of success without this level of discomfort or investment. All the while they are failing and people are telling them what it is that needs to be done for success, but they just don’t believe that that amount of work is necessary for success nor do they want to invest that amount of work.

Then the reality hits them, that they just may not be a tough as they though they were and they start having an identity crisis because the person who they’ve built themselves up as in their mind should be able to get “this job” done, but it is not getting done.

Let me explain further. If you’ve won the spelling bee from 2nd grade all the way to 9th grade with little to no practice, you kinda believe that you can win in 10th grade with little to no practice. But everyone is telling you that the 10th grade spelling bee is more difficult, so you hire a coach to help you. All the while you are fighting the coach when he’s asking you to read the dictionary, read more books, study the etymology of words, etc.,. And you just don’t want to do it, nor do you see it as being necessary. So in order to prepare for the spelling bee, you attend some mock competitions and you fail miserably. The first thing that you do is attribute it to the “new stuff” that you’re doing, because BEFORE all of this new shyt, you were doing just fine.

And then you begin to question the methodology of the coaching, the teaching and how you learn.

And then you begin to find out what it is that you need to change, without recognizing that YOU never did anything that the coach asked you to do in order to change anything.

Then it hits you……… you ask yourself, “Have I been running from this because its too hard or because it doesn’t work?”

And then you come to the place where you say, “Damn, maybe I’m not as good of a speller that I thought I was.”

Once this sets in, its all downhill from here…… UNLESS…..

You can clearly recognize what this is and how you can fix it.

You see, Simeon, within your question is your answer. You said, “As much as I would like to believe that I’m mentally tough, I’m just not as tough as I thought I was.”

So change your THINKING!! Think that you are as mentally tough as you think you are and stop doubting yourself. Identify the fears and excuses that creep into your mind and then learn how to eliminate them. Whip out your copy of Chump Repellent and put it to work. Don’t just let sit around and collect dust. Listen to it and use it and become the Champion that you know you can be!

Take care

Coach, How Do You KNOW When You’re Being A Chump and When You’re Being Smart

Auto Date Thursday, March 6th, 2008

==========
Question
==========

Coach Ferguson, I have a question for you: “How do you know when you’re being a Chump and when you’re being smart? Let me explain, I was sick the other day and I had a workout to do and I just thought that it was smart to take the day off, rest, and just do the workout tomorrow after I feel better. Was I being a Chump? What do you think?”

===========
Answer
===========

First I would like to say, thanks for your question.

I guess, without making this too complicated, its an issue of time, importance and purpose.

Meaning, time usually determines if you are injured of if you are hurt. You can have a severe injury, a week from the Super Bowl, the Olympics, State Championships or District Championships and based upon the “event” (or the importance or lack thereof of the event) and the time at which you got hurt - you’ll make a decision on if you need to compete.

A sprained ankle the day before the Olympics is just a “boo-boo”, but a sprained ankle on the Monday before a Saturday football game is a “sprained ankle”. You have time and you’ll let it heal up. It just doesn’t make any sense to show that “you’re tough” on Monday. You need to be “tough” on Saturday.

But…….. there are times when you *really* need to test your resolve and build your Inner Chump resilience and your abillity to crush Chump Moments and this can only occur when you are provided with an opportunity to do so. A cold is that opportunity.

Why? Well, usually (not all the time, but usually) a cold really “knocks you down” but its nothing thats going to really injure you. You do have to be careful, especially if you’re playing or participating in a team sport though because you certainly don’t want to infect any of your teammates. But, as I was saying, most of the time, you can push through a cold and keep moving. Doing that will allow you to build up some Chump Moment resilience.

===============
Check This Out
===============

It’s like a conversation that I had with my client the other day.

I asked him, “Why didn’t you go running?”

He replied, “I couldn’t go running, it was raining outside and I didn’t want to catch a cold.”

I replied, “Do you catch a cold when you get out of the shower?”

He said, “No”.

I said, “Then you will have to agree that there is no correlation between getting wet and getting a cold. When its raining - you run. When its hot - you run and bring water with you. Unless its lightening outside - YOU run. And look at the rain as an opportunity to build some toughness. Don’t be a freaking chump! Your mind will always come up with a reason as to why you don’t have to do something - YOU must identify when this is your Inner Chump swelling up and repel those thoughts and create new ones. Create championship type thoughts and behave like a champion.”

As an athlete you cannot allow circumstances to dictate your actions. You must act in accordance to your core values and your mission. If you want to be a Champion then you need to do what Champions do.

I’m not saying that it was not a good decision to rest. I’m not sayin that it wasn’t. Admittedly, I don’t know all of the factors surrounding the decision or your decision, but I do know this.

I saw a man perform in an amazing fashion with the flu and a stomach virus because he was able to kill his Inner Chump….

And you can do this too, but you can’t do it without practicing it.

You have to practice free throws and you have to practice toughness. Both must be trained and you must identify what must be done to be good a both. I’m not sure what you need to do in order to shoot better free throws, but I do know what you need if you want to work on executing as a Champion at those defining moments which separate the CHAMP from the CHUMP. I do know how you can become a better “U”.

Just get your hands on Chump Repellent –> http://www.ChumpRepellent.com today.

Take care.

Dedicated to your Improvement,

Coach Ferguson

If you don’t have an event coming up and you’re training, sometimes, and I only mean sometimes, its good to “push” to know that if the time came, you could

The Genie In The Bottle

Auto Date Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

Some people believe that there is actually a genie in a bottle that will manifest itself and actually grant you the desires of your heart.

This type of thinking, at best will cause life to kick you in the arse and stomp your freakin’ teeth out.

Don’t get me wrong. You can wish, you can think positively and you can do all of that stuff, but if you don’t make a decision to become comfortable within your discomfort, you are going to be nothing more than a second-class citizen within the world in which you live.

Things which are uncomfortable are tough to deal with. I know. I know how we just sometimes “wish”:

“It would all be over” or “Everything would just go back to normal” or “Things wouldn’t be so hard”

But the bottom line is this. Ain’t no genie coming. Ain’t no wishes going to be granted and if you want to do great things, its going to require a great amount of labor, stick-to-it-tive-ness and discomfort.

But that’s okay.

For those of you that don’t know. I’m doing a ½ marathon every month this year. And I’ve already registered for an Ultra marathon in May. It’s a 50KM (31 miles) in California.

=================
Why Am I Doing This?
=================

Well, sometimes we need to actually see what a little hard work and perseverance can produce. I remember what it was like when I went from doing only 12 repetitions of 225 pounds to doing 30 reps of 225. I also remember what it was like to suck wind at the 4 mile mark and then what it felt like to cross the finish line after doing 26.2

I felt immortal. I felt like was on top of the world.

And you know what…..

That feeling is ONLY provided to those who have made the investment in THAT feeling. And the investment is not COMFORTABLE.

To be Champion in sport and in life requires for you to welcome, endure and look for the comfort within your discomfort or uncomfortable situations. This can only be done by repressing that thing which wants to make you run away, that thing that makes you want to quit, that thing that makes you want to question yourself. I call that thing your “Inner Chump”.

If you don’t control your Inner Chump, it will control you. It will cause you to become:

Regular
Normal
Mediocre
Satisfied
Overweight
Underpaid
Stressed
Depressed
Angry

And a host of other things.

Because I’m concerned about you becoming a champion in life (not only sport, but also life), I want to provide you with the chance, the opportunity and privilege of being able to identify, suppress and eliminate your “Inner Chump”

A couple of weeks ago, I told some of you the story of how I ran a ½ Marathon on absolutely no sleep. Now, I must admit, that was not the smartest thing that I’ve ever done, quite honestly it was pretty dumb and I don’t recommend it.

BUT……… I have to let you know how incredible things can be done once you squash the Inner Chump inside of you who constantly tells you what you can’t do and what’s too hard. Your Inner Chump inside of you will turn you into a whiny bytch instead of the Champion that you are supposed to be.

The more you squash your Inner Chump, the more you will illustrate championship type qualities and behaviors. And the more you do that, the more you will recognize that the difference between being a CHAMP or a CHUMP is in “U”.

Take care and have a CHAMPIONSHIP type of day.

Dedicated to your Improvement,

Coach Ferguson
